Update on Kingdom map

Okay, so I made it into the lab for a little bit today and got an updated .jpg image of the final project.  Then I figured out how to upload it somewhere that it could be seen a bit larger, though it still doesn't show as much detail as I would like.  Anyway, here is the link to that one  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3237/2479081988_167af0e078_b.jpg  I uploaded another one here on my xanga as well.  They are mostly the same thing, the only difference (other than size) is that one has neat lines around the smaller maps on the right and the other doesn't, but that's cause I'm still trying to decide which I think looks better.  Feel free to give me some more feedback on it.

Also, in response to the comments I've received, I will send copies to the Kindgom Seneschal, Historian, and possibly the Virtual Scribe if they do decide they want to use it, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.  I'm still trying to decide if I want to post the above link to the Kingdom mailing list and show everybody or not.  Anyone have any thoughts they'd like to share with me on that?

Anyway, back to other stuff I should've been doing all along.  I've been in the process of moving all week and I still have a lot of work to do if I want to be ready to move the remaining stuff tomorrow.

I made a map of Ansteorra.

So I didn't talk about it here, even though I meant to, but now that it's over and I have it back in my possession, I thought I'd talk about the final project I did for my Cartography class.

Anyway, so for this project I considered several different options, most all of which involved the SCA.  Finally, I decided to just make a current map of Ansteorra, one that showed the groups that are currently active and included the new regional boundaries.  Here's what the digital file looks like, if you ask me in person I'll show you the full size 2'x3' poster I made, even though I think it looks like crap.

ansteorra map

Okay, so apparently I didn't create a jpg of the final copy, so this is not exactly what I turned in, but there's not many differences... Well, actually, maybe there are.  Shit.  At first I just thought it was my name and the sources in the bottom corner and some neat lines around the two maps on the right that were still missing, but I added some text about the SCA on the top right side as well, after moving that whole section around a bit.  So this is not the final map at all, but the main features are the same and you can get a rough idea of what I did.  I'll try and make it into the lab this week and get a better jpg.  I have the final cdr file with me on my thumb drive, but I don't have Corel so I can't do anything with it from here.  I should also mention that if the text and stuff isn't really clear, it's because this is compressed down pretty far.  Like I said, the final map printed on a large poster, and the file I was working with was all set to that scale, so when I exported it as a jpg it was way huge and I had to scale it down a bit.  Anyway, the point is ask me to see my poster, cause it's awesome.  It's so awesome, it can look like crap and still be awesome.  I wish I had thought about all this before the Populace meeting tonight because I would have brought it and showed it off, but I just picked it up today, and didn't think to unroll it and look at it again until I got home from Mazzio's.

Sorry this is way past due

Okay so what's happened in the last several months since my last post?  Well I'll tell you.  A lot.  In August we hosted the Ansteorran Heraldic and Scribal Symposium.  Not that this means a lot to me.  I wove, napped and baby-sat through it in that order, so I wasn't really there for the event, but still we did it, and for those that were interested in that sort of thing I have heard it was pretty cool.

Next was the campus demo.  This was a great success if I do say so myself.  We had a lot of people turn out to help.  They helped set stuff up the night before, camp out with it on library lawn that night, run the demo the next day, then take everything down and unload it back into the shed.  A Very Big Thank You to all those that helped - you are all awesome and that's why I love you and like to call you my friends.  Anyway, that was not all that made the demo a success.  We've seen lots of new faces, especially out at fighter practices.  It has been very, very cool.

Following almost immediately after that was Mooneschadowe's Triumphe II.  Another great event and always a lot of fun.  This kept me pretty busy with a lot, but I enjoyed it, and hey, they even gave me a comet so I suppose I've done good.  And guess what - I wore shoes into court this time!  Anyway, so yeah, I was in charge of gate (Head Troll) and while it was a lot of work and I lost a lot of sleep (next time I'm in charge of troll I think I'll listen when people tell me I don't really need to go back to gate every two hours for the shift changes and check for a drop) it was a great experience.  Finding people to sit gate was not a problem at all - A Very Big Thank You to all those that helped here as well, and it was another great sucess.  I also did a children's class that maybe wasn't as great a success, but that's my fault for not being as prepared as in the past.  Oh well the kids didn't seem to notice and I think they had a good time, so it's all good.  A Thank You here to Marlo, who assisted (read warped the loom for me) even though she didn't have too, but you know what - she's awesome too.  Beyond that I really can't remember everything else off the top of my head.  Stuff happened, I think we all had a good time, Mooneschadowe is the awesomest!

I don't think there's been much else in the way of eventing for me recently, and I don't really know what will be coming up soon.  I think Chemin Noir is a definite go, but beyond that we'll see.  I do have some more weaving projects coming up, though some are still in the vague stage of I know I will weave something, but not sure what yet, though I have committed to weaving a white belt first and that will be the next project warped up on my loom, hopefully sometime really soon.  I also want to post pictures of the pieces I wove for Triumphe this year (2 for the archery raffle, 3 for gift baskets?) but my camera phone hasn't been cooperating so I'm not sure when that will happen.

Anyway, that's about it for now.  I need to be headed to class shortly.  I'll post more later whenever I have something that goes here.

SCA Survey

1. Mundane name:
Melissa VonAschen

2. Mundane Job:
student, I also work part time in an office or two on campus

3. Persona name:
Ayla von Aschen

4. How did you come up with your name?
well, the last name was easy, cause it's my mundane name and it's also period.  Ayla is from the same general time period and location and sounded way better to me than most of the thick German female names

5. Where and when did your persona live?
Germany, 15th century I think.  though I don't really have a persona per se, that is more just where the name is traced to

6. What is your Known World location?
The Providence of Mooneschadowe in the Northern Region of the Kingdom of Ansteorra

7. What kingdom do you consider to be your home?
Ansteorra

8. How long have you played?
I started in September of '03, so coming up on 4 full years

9. How did you get started?
I went to a fighter practice on the lawn in front of our dorms with Asric who was already familiar with the SCA, then I met Mylisant and Ælfwyn who were weaving and I was hooked

10. Why did you join?
cause it looked to be a lot of fun and a good way to make friends and get to know people in Stillwater

11. Have you registered a name?
no... I really need to get around to doing that.  I finally got the stuff filled out, I just stopped whenever I was told I needed like 6 more copies and never got around to completing it all

12. Have you registered a device?
no, but like the name, I have one picked out, I just need to actually get around to finishing the paper work

13. What awards have you been granted? In what kingdom did you receive these awards?
in Ansteorra I've received my AoA (Award of Arms) and a Thistle (an Arts and Sciences award) in the field of Weaving

14. How many events do you attend each year?
10-12 on average i think

15. What is the best event you have ever been to?
ooh, that's a tough question and really hard to answer depending on what angle I look at it from.  hmmm...  looking back over my SCA blog, maybe Mooneschadowe's Triumphe event last year, or Castellan a few years before when I got my AoA, or my first Gulf Wars, or maybe my first ever event which was a Northkeep's WinterKingdom...  I honestly don't know, I've been to over 40 now and over 4 years it's hard to pick favorites

16. What is the worst event you have ever been to?
I'll have to agree with Amber and say probably one of the Axeman events I went to, though I wasn't there in '07 but I was the 3 previous years.  It's always freezing cold and with the exception of one year I didn't really have much reason to be there other than Asric wanted to fight and so I tagged along

17. What event do you make it to every year?
Mooneschadowe's Guardian/Triumphe, Northkeep's WinterKingdom

18. What event do you refuse to go to?
I've never refused an event really, though I suppose if I had to say any it would be Blood of Heroes in Calontir or their Winter War Maneuvers

19. Who is your favorite person to event with?
wow, there are a lot of people i like to event with so i can't say i have a favorite per se, but i suppose Rikr and Ælfwyn would be at the top of the list somewhere

20. What activities do you participate in?
first and foremost is probably weaving, but i also sit gate, serve feast, set up and tear down camps and site in general (i really like this actually), i've helped decorate halls though i'm not really sure how or why, i occasionally baby-sit, i revel, i sing in large groups, "flit" across site and find people to hug

21. What activity would you like to learn?
lots!

22. Are you a marshal?
nope, but i've considered it

23. How many tents have you had destroyed at events?
none

24. Has your garb ever caught on fire?
nope

25. Have you ever woke up in a strange person’s tent?
only when i camp with strange people ;) but never like an unknown person's tent

26. Do you have a pavilion?
nope, but i've helped paint many

27. Are you a peer?
nope

28. Do you ever want to be a peer?
*shrug* not right now i don't think i do, but that could change i suppose

29. Is a coincidence that peer rhymes with beer?
nope, it was totally intentional :)

30. Are you a squire or protege or apprentice?
nope

31. Who would you like to be squired to?
i don't think i want to be squired to anyone

32. What is your war cry?
Death to Trimaris?

33. Have you ever been pulled off of the field for your safety?
not physically, though i've been called off the field with other water bearers whenever the water bearers hold was lifted

34. What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you in armor?
well the one time i armored up none of it fit so they had to use lots of duck tape and stuff to try and make it stay without just falling off, then i couldn't move really well so all the shots i threw were with my arm completely extended cause i couldn't bend my elbow or wrist and i'm sure that was humorous cause Ollj laughed at me while i hit him, also getting thwacked repeatedly on the helmet by Ollj just enough to make my helm ring a bit... so i guess what i'm saying all of it combined was pretty funny

35. Have you read Corpora?
nope, though i'm sure i've skimmed bits and pieces here and there

36. Circlets - how do you feel?
i don't really have an opinion on them, they are just circlets, do other people really have strong feelings about them?

37. What household(s) do you belong to?
none officially, though i've been told that some of the circles of people i associate with are kinda like households, such as Mooneschadowe in general

38. If you could change one thing about the SCA what would it be?
hmm... maybe to make everyone that attends events to really understand it's a volunteer based organization and that everyone needs to pitch in from time to time in one area or another, such as being officers, cleaning up after events, volunteering with children's activities or whatever

39. What is your favorite part of the SCA?
another really tough one, but i think i'd have to say the people i've met in the SCA and the way i like to think for the most part that we all work together

40. What is your SCA goal for the next 7 years?
maybe visit more groups and places i've never been before, get some better garb together on my own as opposed to always wearing stuff that's been given to me (though that's some of my favorite garb), learning new things, becoming a better example for new players

To all my pixie-stick loving friends:

So I was talking to someone recently and found out that there are some people in the SCA who aren't really happy with our pixie-sticking habits.  This isn't really a surprise and honestly, it's not going to stop me from continuing it all together.  After all, I've heard I'm the one of best at taking pixie-stick virginities ;)  However, one of their biggest complaints did concern me so I thought I'd share it with you here.  Apparently after Castellan people walked the list field for hours picking up little pieces of trash from the straws.  This is not cool!  I like pixie sticks and I like sharing them with my friends, but I do not like hearing that other people are spending considerable time picking up our trash.  So here's the deal - we need to clean up after ourselves.  There's trash cans and pockets and pouches and whatnot so let's use them.  Also, you may consider sticking with those big ones in the plastic straws as opposed to the little paper ones.  There's way more licking to be done that way and the trash is way easier to keep track of.  Anyway, just some thoughts I wanted to share.  Feel free and highly encouraged to mention this to anyone else you know that is a fan and doesn't read this.  Thanks.  Looking forward to pixie sticking and being pixie sticked many more times,

Ayla
